Our Beginning
The Tewksbury Community Pantry was established in January 1995, born from a collective desire among community leaders to tackle the pressing issue of hunger within Tewksbury. Before the Pantry’s inception, St. William’s Church of Tewksbury operated a smaller-scale food share program. However, it soon became clear that the growing needs of the community outpaced what the church program could provide.
Expansion and Support
Recognizing the urgent need for a more substantial solution, town officials stepped in to support the burgeoning initiative. The Pantry was granted a rent-free space at the Center School on Pleasant Street, where it operated for nearly three years. This period marked the Pantry’s transition from a small, church-based program to a town-supported entity capable of serving wider community needs.
Building a Home
The Tewksbury Community Pantry eventually outgrew its initial home and required a dedicated space to continue its mission. In response, the local community came together in an extraordinary display of generosity and solidarity. Through donations of money, labor, and building materials, a new building was erected specifically for the Pantry’s use. Located on the grounds of the Department of Public Works, this building stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to feeding its residents in need.
Today and Tomorrow
Today, the Tewksbury Community Pantry operates out of this purpose-built facility, continuing to serve as a lifeline for those facing food insecurity. The story of the Pantry is a vivid illustration of what can be achieved when a community comes together for the common good. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to our mission of alleviating hunger and providing support to the residents of Tewksbury.
